Networking to build your business

You probably think I’m going to write about online networking, because I’m a web person. Actually, most people look to the web to find resources, but they don’t usually build trust by looking at websites.

If your business is driven largely by referrals (as mine is) it pays to build real, in-person relationships, too.

If you are already a member of one of Central Ohio’s many formal networking clubs, you may want to check out Network Today, which is an umbrella group that helps people find the right networking “home” to join, promotes events around the city, and is a great place to list your business and post jobs (or search for jobs). You can read more about this group below. Click on “My Clubs” to see to which groups I personally belong and promote.

I am a member of Network Today, and I also pay for membership in some local clubs.

On Mondays, I build relationships through community service. As a member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus, I meet other business owners and professionals and engage in community projects such as tutoring, serving food, building furniture, volunteering at the library and much more. These relationships do eventually turn into more business for my company, but the primary goal is helping the children of Columbus.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, you’ll generally find me spending an hour networking with at least one Gold Star club. Gold Star is a business networking group which tracks referrals passed and business generated by its members for other members. The club is part of a national company that organizes such clubs across the U.S.

On Friday mornings, I’m at Networking Professionals of Columbus, a tight-knit and growing group that is independent and locally-operated group. Member dues are used to pay for weekly continental breakfast, occasional social events, a catered quarterly Visitor’s Day, and to fund scholarships and nonprofit pursuits.

If you are interested in any of these groups, you may attend as my guest at no charge. Please contact me to let me know when you would like to visit!
